Nauticam OM-D Housing Review

I purchased the Nauticam housing from Bluewater Photo and must say I am very impressed with both Bluewater's service and the Nauticam housing. This is the first Nauticam housing that I have owned, having previously used a Sea & Sea RDX housing and an Ikelite video housing. Out of all the housings that I have owned this is by far the best. The build quality is fantastic and the ergonomics are well thought out. The latches for both the lens port and main door are very easy to operate yet are very secure. No chance of accidentally unscrewing a port in the rinse tank (a friend of mine had that happen to his Ikelite housing). All the buttons and controls are easy to access and don't require any fumbling around to access them.

I got the housing about 2 weeks before leaving on a trip to Palau. Despite having only about 30 minutes in the pool to practice with it, everything felt natural and I had no problem adapting to the new controls. I do all of my shooting in manual, so being able to quickly adjust the shutter speed, aperture, and ISO in high action spots like Blue Corner and German Channel was great.

The camera tray is designed so that you can change the battery without removing it. This is a feature you really learn to appreciate very quickly when you have to change the battery on a small moving boat and you want to get the camera back in the housing as quickly as possible. Another nice feature is the wedge block in the flash area that forces you to raise the flash when you install the camera. This may seem like a small thing, but as someone who has jumped in the water and then found out the camera flash was not set properly, it is really nice.

For travel, my entire camera setup including a 7-14 dome port, Nauticam flex tray, 2 YS-D1 strobes, ULWS control arms, a couple of GoPro cameras, an iPad, and 11” Mac Book Air along with all of my other personal carry-on items fit into a Think Tank Airport Commuter backpack. This bag could easily fit under the seat if needed. This made traveling on the 4 different flights to Palau very easy. While I only took one port with me on this trip, I could easily fit a macro port and lens into the bag also.

All in all, I am very happy with this housing and would strongly recommend it to anyone looking for an OM-D housing.

The perfect start

I am new to underwater photography, the staff at Bluewater photo helped get me into a great system. The Nauticam housing is very easy to use, fits comfortably in my hand and is easy to dive. The port latching system is solid and secure, tough to make a mistake, same for the housing back. The camera functions are all easy to access even with dry gloves. This housing has been well thought out, well engineered and well built.

Due to the loss of my compact camera with wide-angle and strobes, I had to upgrade and decided / was persuaded to upgrade to SLR. Due to cost of housings for SLRs and size, I was looking into various options and the Olympus OMDEM5 seemed to give me a great combination of quality, compactness and affordability. I used the rig with the standard 14-42 lens for 4 days of diving and it has great access to all controls. Video shortcut is a great option. Housing is fantastic with buttons on camera aligning very nicely once in the housing. Changing port is simple and lock is secure. The housing lock is very secure, i dont see how it could come undone underwater. The camera, housing and other parts were compact enough that i could use a camera bag as personal carry on in the plane. Overall im very impressed and cant think of anything more id want. Many thanks to Scott and team for their help and advise.

I have now used the housing on approximately 50 dives. I have found it to be everything good that has been written about it, even in the Nauticam ads! It is easy to use, has all the buttons and knobs to fully access everything I need on the camera. In fact some of the functions on the camera are easier to use when it is in the housing, like the Fn1 button. It is small enough that I can access all the controls with just my right hand, other than zoom. I can press Fn1 and still use the shutter and I do not have big hands very nice as I like to use the back button focus feature. The lens ports are easy to switch out and seem to have a very positive locking system. So far so good, not one little complaint.

Great camera. Lightweight yet extremely fast focus. Takes great pictures above and under water. Video is also very good. Seems sturdy. Good ergonomics. One of the dial covers did come off prematurely and had to reglue it on, but otherwise seems like its rock solid stable. Battery life is good. I use it underwater with the Nauticam housing as 12-50mm port and don't feel like I need another lens.

I have been a Nikon and Sea & Sea user since 2005 and my plan was to go full frame with the D800, but I have also been curious about M4/3 for a while.
The compact design and low light performance of the OM-D made me decide to give it a try and I was really amazed by this little camera.
I decided to order the Nauticam OM-D housing + dome for the 8mm from Bluewater Photo. The first impressions of the housing was that it's really robust and compact kit with a much smaller dome than i'm used to due to the smaller sensor.
Most of my photos are taken in dark waters with low light conditions and high ISO. This camera with it's 5-axis stabilization and the heavy-duty Nauticam housing is perfect for that kind of environment, and there is no problem using the controls of the housing wearing dry gloves.
It has taken me some time to get used to the controls and menus, but I like this rig it more every time I use it. I would definitely recommend this housing to any under water photographer looking for a new rig, specially for traveling.

I love travel photography and am new to the underwater world. I purchased the Nauticam OMD housing kit right before our last trip. The housing fit perfectly and was simple to use with the strobe and macro lens I bought from BWP. The controls are intuitive and easy to manage underwater. Scott and his team spent hours on the phone helping us put the package together and answering our questions, as well as fixing a couple of problems we had. Their service is extraordinary!

I had Blue Water Photo set up a system for my E-M5 with Nauticam Housing, YS-D1 strobes, and a Light and Motion Sola 800 focus light. The system worked flawlessly in Palau. I used the Nikon m.Zuiko 9-18mm lens for underwater work and I like the 17mm f2.8 and 14-42 f3.5-5.6 for topside.

As many other reviews have said, this is a great rig for travel due to the size of the camera and availability of m4/3 lenses. This offers a lot of versatility and great image quality.

I love this housing. I never have any fog issues and it fits the omd like a glove. All of its controls are very well marked and easy to use.

After my previous system stopped working I turned to Blue Water Photo for help in selecting my new system. The team was extremely helpful and were not only out to close a quick sale but really helped me to find the system that was right for me. In the end I got the Oly OMD with Nauticam housing and UL arms for the strobes. Since then I have done around 50 dives with the system and am very pleased with the results and the ergonomics of the housing. All the buttons are easily accessible and with the options to customise the buttons on the Olympus OM-D you can really make this system your own. As my previous rig flooded I also love the leak detection system in the housing that will give a clear warning if any water enters the housing. The setup I have is very negative and even with 4 floats it still is a bit heavy so make sure to add enough floatation to compensate.
