Garmin Fenix 8 Pro: Initial Thoughts & Review
Posted by Elma Tarr on September 15th, 2025

Garmin has updated the popular Fenix 8 to the new Garmin Fenix 8 Pro - now available at Bluewater scuba. This extremely popular smartwatch, made for adventurers, has been updated with LTE & Satellite allowing you to make photo calls, text, and ping your location from anywhere in the world. So if you're a diver that needs a rugged diveable watch, and you're traveling to some of the world's most remote locations, you can leave your Garmin InReach at home and take the Fenix 8 with you instead. it's important to note that the Fenix 8 Pro is water-resistant and fine for recreational dives, but it does not include key dive computer functions like decompression planning, nitrox support, or detailed dive logging — for those features, you’ll want to look at the Garmin Descent series watches.
We are very excited to have this watch on our shelves at Bluewater Photo & Scuba as it's the perfect all-purpose smartwatch for our customers who are constantly traveling with us to locations like the Galapagos, the outer reaches of Indonesia, Antarctica, etc.
What's New and Standout Features
- Connectivity Upgrade: This is the first Fenix watch to add LTE + built-in cellular capabilities (via Garmin's service) plus two-way satellite messaging. You can now send texts, make calls, and ping your location even if you're off-grid
- Display Options: Comes in AMOLED versions in 47mm & 51mm sizes, plus a limited MicroLED 51mm model with ultra-bright display (~4,500 nits) for excellent sunlight visibility
- Rugged Construction: Titanium bezels and sapphire crystal glass, which helps with durability in tough environments.
Speaker & Mic: Improved speaker loudness compared to earlier models. Also includes built-in mic for voice messages and calls over LTE.
Who Should Buy the Fenix 8 Pro?
- Adventurers and outdoor users who need independent communication (texts, SOS, check-ins) without relying on carrying a phone.
- People who demand high visibility in harsh light conditions (bright sun, snow, mountains) thanks to that MicroLED/bright AMOLED display.
- Users who are okay with paying more and charging more often in exchange for those cutting-edge features.
Final Take
If you want a rugged, fully featured adventure smartwatch with LTE + satellite capabilities, the Fenix 8 Pro sets a new bar—especially with display quality and connectiveness. But be fully aware that you’re trading off battery life, size and cost. For many divers, outdoors people, or remote travelers, this will be worth it. For others, sticking with a non-Pro or older generation might offer nearly all the essentials at a much better value.
