At Bluewater Photo, we don't just sell gear—we dive with it. Our team has tested all of our GoPro trays in a wide variety of conditions, from the cold waters of the Pacific Northwest, to tropical waters as we took them around the world on dive trips with Bluewater Travel. Across every dive, one thing was evident, a quality tray helped capture smoother and more stable videos each time; while also providing a base for high-powered video lights and GoPro Accessories. GoPro has long remained the golden standard for action cameras and underwater videography. However, you nay have noticed that the smallest splash, current or movement can cause your entire video to 'shake'. Pairing your GoPro with the right tray will eliminate this and take your footage to the next level...
When deciding which GoPro tray is perfect for your set-up, you may want to keep in mind the following factors:
Many of the popular brands, such as Big Blue and Beneath the Surface, offers trays with either a single handle, or with two handles. Choosing between the two depends greatly on your travel needs, diving styles and what type of video you intend to capture.
- Single-Handle Trays: These trays are more compact, lightweight and much easier to travel with. Without significantly increasing the size of your set-up, single-handle trays are a great choice for snorkelers, recreational divers and videographers needing only a single-light.
- Dual-Handle Trays: These are the preferred trays for serious underwater videographers, as the distance between the handles is usually greater and results in even better stability, making it ideal for tracking faster moving subjects in more action-filled environments. Dual-handle trays also allow the mounting two video lights, which create wide and even illumination of your subjects.
With constant exposure to salt water and natural elements, GoPro Trays need to be made from durable, corrosion-resistant materials. For this exact reason, most premium trays are constructed from anodized aluminium, which also allows the trays to be lightweight, rugged and last for years of use. Aluminium is also a suitable choice as it is slightly negatively buoyant underwater, fantastic for stable shooting!
When beginning your GoPro journey, it is usually a good idea to start off with a simple design and set-up. It is important, however, to choose a system that will allow for future upgrades, such as adding extra lights, floats, ball mounts, or flex arms. You want your equipment to grow with you.
Over the many years of diving with GoPros, our team notes that it is a good idea to do a buoyancy check for your set-up before you dive, in either the pool or very shallow water. Once you add video lights, arms, and other accessories, your setup can become significantly heavier underwater. Testing buoyancy beforehand allows you to make adjustments and avoid carrying an unexpectedly negative rig throughout your dive. If your rig is heavy and you do not want to sacrifice any attachments, consider looking at floats or buoyancy arms.
Water absorbs light very quickly, and due to this, the color red seems to disappear after only five meters. This is evident in your GoPro footage, where vibrant reef scenes and marine life will appear with a dull tint of blue or green. Video lights eliminate this issue, restoring the natural color of underwater scenes and subjects, bringing your footage back to life. Many divers will start with a single video light- great for macro subjects, travel-friendly rigs and budget-concious set-ups. When using two video lights, however, your videography game is elevated. Two video lights allow for wider illumination and less shadows, and is perfect for capturing wide-angle shots, reef-scenes and larger animal life.
When deciding how to mount your video lights onto your GoPro tray, you generally have two options: flex arms and ball mounts. Flex arms are simple and easy to adjust underwater, allowing you to change the lighting angles to your liking. Ball Mounts, on the otherhand, offer greater stability as they can take on much more weight without shifting underwater. Ball mounts also provide a moudlar system that you can upgrade over time.
Many of the trays in our collection are compatible with all the necessary add-ons for the perfect GoPro set-up:
- Powerful Underwater Video Lights
- Flex arms and ball mount systems
- Float arms to improve the buoyancy of heavier rigs
- Filters and Flip Lenses
