Best Surface Marker Buoys for SCUBA Diving

Published April 2026 | Author: Jamie Ayliffe
An essential, yet often over-looked, piece of equipment for any Scuba diver is the Surface Marker Buoy (SMB), also known as the safety sausage. SMBs are brightly colored, inflatable tubes which are designed for high visibility, marking a diver's location while they are underwater. SMBs are not just gear; they are vital communication tools that alert others to your presence, signal your ascent, and enhance safety in busy waters. The answer to the question "Should I bring an SMB?" is always YES! The ocean is beautiful yet unpredictable, and SMBs offer peace of mind, allowing you to explore underwater wonders confidently.
At Bluewater, we place great importance on education and ensuring our divers are well-informed about their purchases. Therefore, before we introduce our top Surface Marker Buoy selections, let's explore the critical factors to keep in mind when investing in your new SMB.

Design:

Open-ended vs Closed-ended

Open-ended surface marker buoys (SMBs) have a simple design with a single open end for quick inflation using a regulator purge, allowing for easy filling even at depth. The open end, situated at the lower part of the SMB, remains submerged to prevent air loss, making it ideal for calm waters. It is crucial to keep the line connected to the buoy taut while diving to avoid air escaping from the bottom. Modern designs often incorporate self-sealing ends or check-valves to prevent deflation on the surface.

On the other hand, close-ended (or closed-circuit) SMBs are completely sealed with no openings. These SMBs can be inflated using an oral inflation valve or a low-pressure air supply similar to a dry suit or the LPI connected to your BCD. An over-pressure/release valve is installed to prevent the buoy from tearing due to expanding gas during ascent. Close-ended SMBs are better suited for rougher conditions.

Color:

SMBs are available in a variety of vibrant neon colors that enhance visibility above the water. Traditionally, SMBs are commonly seen in bright orange, red, or yellow; however, contemporary designs now offer options in pink, white, and green . This allows divers to personalize their equipment while ensuring easy identification from a distance.

When selecting a color for your SMB, it is crucial to consider the significance of colors in different regions. While red and orange are conventional choices, the color yellow can sometimes indicate an emergency or distress signal.

Additionally, many SMBs include safety features like reflective tape or reflective writing, such as the phrases "diver below." These additions significantly improve visibility, making it easier for divers to be seen in various conditions.

Size:

The size of surface marker bouys does matter. While smaller buoys (~1m / 3.3ft) are more lightweight and convenient to handle, store and inflate, larger buoys (1-2m+ / 3.3 - 6.6ft +) offer increased visibility to boat traffic, especially in challenging weather conditions. Your selection should be based on the diving location and the nature of your diving activity.

How to care for your Surface Marker Buoy

After each use, make sure to rinse your SMB with fresh water, paying attention to thoroughly clean the inside of the nozzle when possible. To help maintain its quality, remember to dry it entirely in a shaded area, avoiding direct sunlight if you can. When storing, it's best to keep it loosely rolled in a cool, dry place. Before your next dive, don't forget to inspect the valve and inflator for any leaks, and check for any signs of wear near the attachment points. These simple steps will help keep your SMB in top condition for your future dives.

Reels for your SMB

Have you found the perfect SMB for your diving adventures? That's fantastic!

Incorporating a reel into your SMB setup is crucial for a seamless diving experience. Reels provide a secure attachment point for your SMB, allowing divers to deploy them from depth with ease while managing the line effectively.

Between uses, these reels can be conveniently clipped to a D-ring or stowed in your BCD pocket for quick access.
When choosing a reel, consider the depth of your dives and the frequency of SMB deployment.

Remember, the deeper you go, the more reel line length you'll require to ensure a hassle-free experience.

FAQs about Surface Marker Buoys

The main differences between SMBs (Surface Marker Buoys) and DSMBs (Delayed Surface Marker Buoys) comes down to usage and timing. SMBS are typically infaled at the beginning of a dive and towed by the diver throughout, making them ideal for shore entries, shallow dives and training dives. On the otherhand, DSMBs are deployed at the end of a dive to signal the safety stop or ascent. Preferred for boat dives, deep dives and currents, DSMBs can be conveniently tucked into pockets or clipped onto D-rings when not in use.
Here is a step-by-step guide to deploy your DSMB underwater. Please note that this is purely a guideline, and additional training is always a great idea for handling an DSMB.

1. Unroll your DSMB, ensure that your reel is not tangled.

2. Achieve neutral buoyancy at your safety stop depth, or required depth.

3. Inflate your DSMB using one of the three methods:

- Alternate Air Source: Purge your octopus into the open-end of your DSMB

- Oral inflate: One breath at a time, blow into the oral inflation valve by pushing down onto the end of the nozzle and exhaling.

- Low-pressure inflator- disconnect your LPI from your BCD and attach/push it onto the DSMB nozzle and purge air until it is inflated.

4. Launch: Release your DSMB, ith your finger in the reel, holding the line taut until it reaches the surface. DO NOT attach the DSMB to your BCD and do not hold the reel too tight.

For many training agencies, SMB skills are a requirement. Although you may not have been taught these skills in your dive course, it is recommended to acquire the specific knowledge to handle SMBs safely and effectively. If done incorrectly, it could potentially be hazardous, such as entanglement in the ropes or rapid ascent. Many training agencies, such as PADI or SSI, should be able to assist you in this training.
