Best Surface Marker Buoys for SCUBA Diving

Design:
Open-ended vs Closed-ended
On the other hand, close-ended (or closed-circuit) SMBs are completely sealed with no openings. These SMBs can be inflated using an oral inflation valve or a low-pressure air supply similar to a dry suit or the LPI connected to your BCD. An over-pressure/release valve is installed to prevent the buoy from tearing due to expanding gas during ascent. Close-ended SMBs are better suited for rougher conditions.
Color:
When selecting a color for your SMB, it is crucial to consider the significance of colors in different regions. While red and orange are conventional choices, the color yellow can sometimes indicate an emergency or distress signal.
Additionally, many SMBs include safety features like reflective tape or reflective writing, such as the phrases "diver below." These additions significantly improve visibility, making it easier for divers to be seen in various conditions.

How to care for your Surface Marker Buoy
Reels for your SMB
When choosing a reel, consider the depth of your dives and the frequency of SMB deployment.
Remember, the deeper you go, the more reel line length you'll require to ensure a hassle-free experience.
FAQs about Surface Marker Buoys
1. Unroll your DSMB, ensure that your reel is not tangled.
2. Achieve neutral buoyancy at your safety stop depth, or required depth.
3. Inflate your DSMB using one of the three methods:
- Alternate Air Source: Purge your octopus into the open-end of your DSMB
- Oral inflate: One breath at a time, blow into the oral inflation valve by pushing down onto the end of the nozzle and exhaling.
- Low-pressure inflator- disconnect your LPI from your BCD and attach/push it onto the DSMB nozzle and purge air until it is inflated.
4. Launch: Release your DSMB, ith your finger in the reel, holding the line taut until it reaches the surface. DO NOT attach the DSMB to your BCD and do not hold the reel too tight.
