Suunto Ocean vs Garmin Fenix 8

Garmin Fenix 8 vs. Suunto Ocean

As dive computers evolve, so do the expectations of divers. Today, many divers are turning to advanced multi-sport smartwatches that seamlessly blend everyday functionality with reliable diving capabilities. I know that this is what I look for in a dive computer myself, so that I do not have to change devices everytime I go diving. One popular option is the dive smartwatch, offering versatile features for both land and underwater use. Among the top contenders in the market, the Garmin Fenix 8 and the Suunto Ocean are two standout choices.

The Garmin Fenix 8 offers an exceptional combination of cutting-edge technology and rugged design, making it a popular choice for outdoor enthusiasts who also want a reliable smartwatch for diving. This smartwatch is packed with diving features tailored to divers, including multi-frequency GPS, advanced dive tracking, and robust water resistance. When comparing the Suunto Ocean vs Garmin Fenix 8, there are notable differences in their approach to dive computing. The Suunto dive computer has long been a trusted name in diving, with a focus on underwater-specific functions such as detailed dive logs, air integration, and nitrogen loading calculations. The Suunto Ocean offers specialized dive computer features designed for serious divers, with robust underwater metrics and data logging, making it a solid option for those focused purely on diving.

Ultimately, whether you opt for the Suunto Ocean or the Garmin Fenix 8, the right choice depends on your diving needs and how much you value versatility in a smartwatch for diving.

This article takes a deep dive into both devices, outlining their strengths, differences, and what type of diver each is best suited for. All of the gear on our Bluewater Photo and Scuba website has been tested firsthand by one or many of our expert team members. I chose to test the differences between the Garmin Fenix 8 and the Suunto Ocean myself, and took both dive computers diving in Sodwana Bay, South Africa and will highlight the differences below.

The Garmin Fenix 8 is more than just a dive computer. It's a premium multi-sport smartwatch designed for those who train hard, travel light, and dive confidently. While its dive features are not as advanced as some dedicated computers, it still offers everything a recreational diver might need.

Key Dive Features:

  • EN 13319 certification (dive-grade)
  • Surface GPS tracking for entry/exit points
  • Dive modes with air and Nitrox (up to 40%)
  • Bühlmann ZHL-16c algorithm with customizable gradient factors

Smartwatch Highlights:

  • AMOLED touchscreen + tactile buttons
  • Offline maps, voice assistance, music playback
  • Garmin Pay for contactless payments
  • Built-in flashlight and advanced sports tracking

My honest opinion: The Fenix 8 performed amazingly underwater. The screen and was easy to read, the alarms were obvious, the modes seemed very accurate and they were customisable to my diving needs. Above water, the data that I uploaded onto my app was easy to follow, and the GPS co-ordinates of my entry and exit were spot-on. The maps were not as good as the Suunto Ocean's though, and I felt it did lack air integration. I did not go deeper than 30 meters (100ft) and did not need advanced features, but I think that this dive computer would not be an ideal fit for very serious divers or tech divers. It's battery did not last as longas the Suunto Ocean's either. It did, however out perform the Ocean on land- the sports features were AMAZING!

The Fenix 8 is ideal for divers who also run, hike, cycle, or want a watch that transitions from dive site to boardroom.

Suunto Ocean: The Dive-Focused Smartwatch

$719.00

Purchase Your Oceanic Biolite Travel BCD

Suunto’s Ocean watch bridges the gap between classic dive computers and modern smartwatches. It puts diving first, while still offering over 95 land-based activity modes and essential smartwatch features.

Key Dive Features:

  • Rated to 60 m; air integration supported via Suunto Tank Pod
  • Supports up to 5 gas mixes, including Trimix
  • 3D dive path visualizations using internal sensors
  • Long 60-hour dive mode battery life

Smartwatch Highlights:

  • AMOLED sapphire touchscreen display
  • Durable stainless steel build
  • Activity tracking, phone notifications, music control
  • Eco-friendly design and manufacturing

My honest opinion: I really enjoyed diving with the Suunto Ocean- the screen was incredibly bright, even in poor visibility, and the sleek design was very comfortable to wear, even under my wetsuit (especially with the lockable buttons!). I like the colored arch on the screen that showed decompression statuses. The data was also accurate, and as I mentioned, the 3D dive maps are actually incredible. Also, the air integration was seemless. This watch is also not made for technical divers, as it does not have CCR or Trimix capabilities- but for recreational divers of every level- it's a great fit. On land, the sports modes and fitness tracking was really good, but it did not compare to the Fenix 8.

Suunto Ocean is great for divers who prioritize extended dive capabilities, tank pressure tracking, and conservation-minded gear.

Choose the Garmin Fenix 8 if you:

  • Want an all-in-one watch for sports, travel, and diving

Choose the Suunto Ocean if you:

  • Want air integration and multi-gas support
  • Dive frequently or travel for long dive trips (60-hour battery)
  • Prefer a dive-first device with long-term underwater performance

Final Thoughts

I found both the Garmin Fenix 8 and Suunto Ocean smart, stylish, and adventure-ready, representing a new era of dive computers. The decision comes down to your diving needs vs. your lifestyle preferences. For all-in-one performance, Garmin has the edge. For pure diving power, Suunto leads the way.
