The Fenix 8 supports Air and Nitrox (up to 40%), and it uses the Bühlmann ZHL-16c algorithm, allowing for adjustable gradient factors — a big deal for divers looking for precise decompression profiles. What I find to be a fantastic feature is its ability to seamlessly transition from land to sea — tracking your trail runs, swims, bike rides, and dives — makes it a great pick for the active lifestyle. The Garmin Fenix 8 does not offer air integration or diver-to-diver communication, which many advanced and technicl divers rely on.

If you've been looking for a beautiful, smartwatch-style dive computer that doesn’t compromise on functionality, I would definitely say the Suunto Ocean is a top contender. This 2-in-1 dive computer and smartwatch is designed for the modern diver, it combines sport features like heart rate and activity tracking with serious dive capabilities.

Jamie Ayliffe, a scuba instructor and one of our team members, took this dive watch diving over numerous dives, and especially enjoyed the bright, easily readible screen with a  1.43" AMOLED display. She says in her review that even at 25 meters deep, in really poor visibility, she had no issues reading the important data such as dive time, depth and NDL limits. Jamie also mentions that it has a very friendly user-interface, especially for divers moving up from simpler models such as the Zoop, with the three buttons easy to navigate (even when diving with thick gloves!).

Best for: Divers wanting a smart design with high-end air integration and post-dive data. I also recommend this for divers who lead active lifestyles and do not feel like swapping out devices every time they dive. 

Not well suited for: Tech divers who go to greater depths and need Trimix or CCR functions. Having slim wrists, I also find that as a smartwatch, it is on the bulkier side, but it is still slim for a dive computer.

This classic from Suunto has stood the test of time — and for good reason. The Suunto Zoop Novo is a no-frills, easy-to-use dive computer perfect for beginners or as a reliable backup. It supports both air and Nitrox (up to 50%), and the large digits on the high-contrast display are easy to read underwater.

As an instructor, I often taught student divers how to use dive computers with this exact model. I find the menu system to be simple, which makes it ideal for beginners or divers who don’t want to scroll through endless options. It doesn’t offer Bluetooth or air integration, but in my opinion, it does everything you need to plan and track a safe recreational dive.

It uses the Suunto RGBM algorithm, trusted by many training agencies around the world. The computer is durable, and while the design may not win awards for sleekness, it delivers where it counts: performance, safety, and price.

The Zoop Novo is best for: Brand-new divers looking for a simple, dependable computer that won’t break the bank.

What I especially like about wearing and diving with the Descent G2, as opposed to the other Garmin models, is how small and compact this computer is. The slim design looks like a true smartwatch and is extremely comfortable for everyday wear.

This model offers full air integration (with the G2i version), a bright AMOLED display, and GPS tracking for both dive sites and post-dive logs. It also includes features for freediving, apnea hunting, and technical dive planning. The customizable dive screens and color-coded safety prompts are standout features, especially when diving in unfamiliar environments.

As with all Garmin watches, you get full smartwatch functionality — think music controls, notifications, sleep tracking, heart rate, and maps. If you're traveling with limited luggage space, it replaces your smartwatch and dive computer in one go.

The Descent G2 is best for: Recreational divers, freedivers, instructors, and travelers who want top-end dive features with full smartwatch power. I also recommend the Descent G2 for divers who are looking for a compact, and slim dive computer that is comfortable for every day use.

Both the Shearwater Tern and the Shearwater Tern Tx dive computers stand out with their compact watch-like styles, the clarity of their screens, their simplicity, and their reliability. This computer combines a rugged design with a bright and easy-to-read 2.2" display and it's titanium bezel and impact-resistant glass make it a great companion for challenging environments, from deep, cold dives to low visibility environments.

What I believe truly sets this computer apart is it's technical capabilities: The Perdix 2 Ti supports multi-gas decompression, trimix and CCR modes, making it a fantastic choice for the more advanced divers or those going on expeditions. It runs off of the very trusted Bühlmann ZHL-16C algorithm with gradient factors, and gives divers full control with Decompression planning. 

The Perdix 2 also supports Air Integration with the Shearwater Swift Transmitter, and can connect with up to 4 different transmitters, making it an excellent choice for sidemount divers, stage or multi-tank diving.
