Garmin G1 vs Fenix vs MK3: Which Dive Computer is Best?

Tested by divers, for divers: At Bluewater Photo and Scuba, all of our staff members are seasoned dive professionals with thousands of dives under their belts. Whether on group dive trips around the world, participating in photography workshops or for their fun dives, our team meticulously test all of the gear featured in our online store in order to give honest opinions and informed recommendations, and the Garmin products are no exception.

Garmin dive computers are highly regarded by many divers and adventurers for their advanced technology, including GPS integration that enhances dive planning and navigation. I particularily admire Garmin computers for their user-friendly interfaces, intuitive menus and clear displays, which make it easy for divers to access important information underwater. Many models are versatile enough for other activities like hiking or swimming, adding value for multi-sport enthusiasts.

These computers are designed for durability, they withstand harsh underwater conditions and offer customizable settings to suit various types of diving, from recreational to technical. Additionally, many devices feature Bluetooth connectivity for easy syncing with smartphones, which allow divers to track and share their experiences effortlessly. Many Garmin models may have a hugher price point compared to more basic dive computers, but with a strong reputation for quality and customer support, Garmin provides confidence to users in their investments. Through this guide, I will review each computer, highlight the pros and cons between the three Garmin dive computers and discuss what type of diver each is made for.

What we like and what you should consider before buying:

Pros:
  •  It is a full dive computer and offers a wide range of dive modes, unlike the Fenix which is not a full dive computer
  • Budget friendly- almost half the price of the Mk3
  • It is smaller and lightweight, yet it is still robust
Cons:
  •  It does not have a colored screen like the others, but is monochrome instead (this can save battery life though).
  • It has weaker fitness tracking, compared to the Fenix
  • Fewer advanced dive features, as when compared to the Mk3

Choose the Garmin Descent G1 if:

You are a recreational diver on a budget, and do not need the most advanced health tracking and dive features, but still want a high functioning and rugid dive computer. I would recommend this for entry level or intermediate divers.

Garmin Fenix 8 Multisport Watch and Dive Computer Review:

For the fitness fanatic who enjoys recreational diving

The Garmin Fenix 8 offers an impressive array of features designed for outdoor enthusiasts and athletes. Key features include:

  • Advanced GPS and Navigation: Multi-band GPS support for enhanced accuracy, along with preloaded maps for various activities, including topographic and ski maps.
  • Multiple Sport Modes: Extensive sport tracking capabilities for activities like running, cycling, swimming, hiking, skiing, and more, with specific metrics for each.

  • Smart Notifications: Syncs with smartphones to receive calls, texts, emails, and app alerts directly on the watch.
  • Long Battery Life: Extended battery performance, with multiple power modes to optimize usage depending on the activity.
  • Wrist-Based Navigation Features: Tools like ClimbPro for real-time elevation data during hikes or climbs, and trend tracking for elevation and grade.

  • Multi-Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS): Support for multiple satellite systems (GPS, GLONASS, Galileo) for reliable tracking in challenging environments.
  • Safety and Tracking Features: Incident detection and assistance features that can alert emergency contacts in case of an emergency during activities.
These features make the Garmin Fenix 8 a powerful tool for anyone who enjoys outdoor adventures and seeks comprehensive fitness tracking.

What we like and what you should consider before buying:

Pros:
  • A good choice for a 'daily wear' watch
  • Has many color choices, and even a solar option
  • Incredible fitness tracking capabilities
  • Beautiful AMOLED screen
Cons:
  • Its dive analystics are not as strong st the Mk3
  • Does not offer Trimix or CCR options and only goes to 40 metres.
  • Higher price point for less dive capabilities

Choose the Garmin Fenix 8 if:

You are a recreational divers who lives an active lifestyle and is looking for a great all-round smartwatch with light diving capabilities. This is not the top choice for Technical divers.

Garmin Descent Mk3 Dive Computer Smartwatch Review:

For the Technical Diver

The Garmin Descent MK3 is a versatile dive computer designed for both divers and outdoor enthusiasts. Key features include:

  • Multiple Dive Modes: Supports various modes, including air, nitrox, trimix, and gauge modes, catering to different diving experiences.
  • Advanced Navigation: Built-in GPS for surface navigation, including mapping and the ability to mark dive sites.
  • High-Resolution Display: A bright, easy-to-read color display that provides clear visibility in various lighting conditions.
  • Bluetooth Connectivity: Allows for syncing with smartphones to share dive logs and access the Garmin Dive app for tracking and reviewing dives.
  • Integrated Dive Log: Automatically logs dives, storing data such as depth, time, and water temperature for easy access and review.

  • Rugged Design: Built to withstand harsh underwater conditions, the MK3 is durable and water-resistant.
These features make the Garmin Descent MK3 a comprehensive tool for divers and adventurers alike, combining diving technology with everyday functionality.

What we like and what you should consider before buying:

Pros:
  • Most advanced dive capabilities out of the three
  • Can go down to 200m, has trimix and CCR modes
  • Allows for air integration and you can even message other divers underwater!
  • Still an extremely strong smartwatch with sports modes
Cons:
  • Higher price point than the G1
  • It takes a bit longer to understand this user-interface
  • May be 'too much' for beginner divers
  • It bulkier than the other options

Choose the Garmin Descent Mk3 if:

You are a technical diver or dive professional who takes dive analytics more seriosly. Honestly, I believe that this is the best overall choice in terms of both dive computer and smartwatch capabilities, and I even use this one as my personal computer.
All 3 of the above models are smartwatches that offer a variety of activities that you can track. These computers connect to the Garmin Connect application where you can view your activities in detail, which I find extremely easy to use and the data is clear to understand. Connect your Garmin to the Garmin Dive application to keep a log of all your dives and look at your dive data.
These advanced dive computers and smartwatches will not only cover your dives but will also help you make the most of your activities out of the water.

Garmin dive computers have raised the bar by having the built-in GPS and combining it with a smartwatch. The computers are trendy and easy to wear on a daily basis, covering all needs for a wristwatch. I personally use a Garmin, and enjoy every dive!

FAQs:

Yes, it is definitely good for diving. It can be used for basic recreational diving, but it not suited for technical diving as its dive modes are limited and it can only go down to 40 metres. It is probably better suited for you if you dive occasionally and do not need advanced features.
The Garmin Descent G1 is more affordable and can be a dedicated dive watch, but its features are not as advanced and it does ot have a colored screen. The Fenix 8 is more of a smartwatch with diving capabilities, made for ocassional divers who lead an active lifestyle, but it is not made for tech divers. The Mk3, on the otherhand, is a great choice for technical divers, dive professionals, and even recreational divers, with great dive and fitness features. The Mk3 is bulkier and often more expensive, but it is an exceptional smartwatch + dive computer combination.

No, beginners can definitely use the Mk3. It may take longer to learn its features, and if you only dive occasionally, you may not even use all of the features. But this dive computer will last you a very long time, and will become more and more useful as your dive career advances.
