Insta360 X6 360-degree 8K camera showing front and rear lenses

Insta360 X6 360° 8K Camera Standard Bundle

High-resolution 360° capture with larger sensors, 8K50 video and serious underwater flexibility—so divers can shoot first and choose the framing after the dive.

The Insta360 X6 redefines underwater 360 capture by replacing traditional "point-and-shoot" framing with total post-dive creative freedom. Instead of worrying about keeping a fast-moving manta ray in the center of your frame or missing action happening behind you on a tight wreck swim-through, the X6 logs a complete 360-degree sphere of your environment. You dive, track animal behavior, and maintain proper buoyancy—then dial in your exact camera angles, zooms, and smooth pans on your phone or laptop long after surfacing.

Why the X6 Outperforms the X5 Underwater

While the Insta360 X5 introduced basic 8K 360 recording, the X6 directly solves the optical and environmental hurdles divers face underwater:

  • Larger Dual 1/1.1" Custom Sony Sensors: Water acts as a natural color filter, rapidly devouring light, red spectrum, and contrast as you descend. The X6's upgraded sensors feature a significantly larger surface area than the X5, delivering vastly improved dynamic range, reduced noise in shaded swim-throughs, and better shadow recovery when paired with 10-bit I-Log.
  • Smoother 8K50 Action Capture: The step up from 8K30 on the X5 to 8K50 on the X6 is a game-changer for marine life encounters. The higher frame rate keeps rapid movements—like darting reef fish or sudden shark passes—tack-sharp and silky smooth when reframed into traditional wide-angle clips.
  • Deeper Naked Waterproofing: The X6 features an upgraded 20 m (66 ft) depth rating directly out of the box (up from 15 m on the X5). This covers shallow reef work, freediving, and snorkeling without needing a housing.
  • Purpose-Built Optical Alignment: For deeper scuba dives, pairing the X6 with its dedicated Invisible Dive Case Pro reaches 60 m (197 ft). Crucially, the system corrects refraction and dome alignment underwater, eliminating the heavy optical seam lines that typically plague dual-lens cameras beneath the surface.
  • Best for: divers, snorkelers and travel creators who want immersive 360 video and flexible reframing after the dive.
  • Main advantage: 8K50 360 capture gives more temporal resolution for moving subjects than the Insta360 X5 camera's 8K30 maximum.
  • Underwater compatibility: native waterproofing to 20 m; use the X6-specific Invisible Dive Case Pro for deeper scuba diving and the dedicated underwater optical setup.
  • Major differentiator: larger 1/1.1-inch sensors, 120MP stills, 10-bit I-Log, Dolby Vision, built-in storage and replaceable lenses.
  • Mounting: standard 1/4"-20 plus Insta360 magnetic mounting; selected magnetic mounts are shared with X5, X4 Air and Ace-series systems.
  • Tradeoff: 8K is spread across the full 360° sphere, so a reframed flat view does not contain eight thousand horizontal pixels. Editing and underwater lighting are also more involved than with a conventional single-lens action camera.

Larger Sensors + 8K50 Give You More to Work With

Water takes away contrast and light quickly. The X6's larger 1/1.1-inch sensors do not eliminate that problem, but they give the camera a stronger starting point than the X5 when you're shooting available light, shaded reefs, late-afternoon dives or fast-moving marine life.

  • 8K50 is useful for smoother motion around sharks, rays and schooling fish.
  • 120MP 360 stills offer substantial cropping and reframing flexibility.
  • 10-bit I-Log gives experienced editors more room for underwater color work.
  • ISO 100–6400 and manual exposure provide useful control when conditions change.

Replaceable Lenses Are a Practical Upgrade for Dive Travel

360-camera lenses sit proud of the camera body, which is great for field of view and less great around boat decks, rocks and crowded rinse tanks. X6's user-replaceable lens system makes accidental lens damage less likely to end an entire trip.

  • Damaged lenses can be replaced without sending the entire camera away.
  • Useful insurance for liveaboards and remote dive destinations.
  • Still treat the exposed glass carefully during entries, exits and gear handling.
  • Keep the protective pouch handy whenever the camera is not shooting.

A Better Fit for 360° Scuba Work

The X6 itself reaches 20 m, but its dedicated Invisible Dive Case Pro is the piece scuba divers should focus on. It extends the system to 60 m and is built around the optical requirements of shooting a dual-lens 360 camera underwater.

  • Native 20 m rating covers snorkeling, pools and many freediving scenarios.
  • X6 Invisible Dive Case Pro extends the setup to 60 m / 197 ft.
  • 360 capture lets you concentrate on buoyancy and animal behavior rather than constant framing.
  • Keep important close subjects away from the lens seam when possible for cleaner stitching.

Side-by-Side Comparison

Insta360 X6 vs X5 vs GoPro MAX2

For underwater shooters, resolution alone is not enough. Native depth rating, sensor size, housing options and the editing ecosystem can matter just as much.

Product Video Output View / Capture Native Waterproofing Best Use System Compatibility
Insta360 X6 Up to 8K50 360; 5K60 flat Full 360°; up to 170° flat 20 m / 66 ft Premium 360 dive/travel capture, faster action, lower-light work X6 Dive Case Pro to 60 m; 1/4"-20; selected shared magnetic mounts
Insta360 X5 Up to 8K30 360; 4K60 flat Full 360° 15 m / 49 ft Better-value 8K 360 system X5-specific dive cases; broad Insta360 accessory ecosystem
GoPro MAX2 True 8K 360 Full 360°; 180° 4K60 single-lens view 5 m / 16 ft GoPro users prioritizing familiar mounts, Quik workflow and replaceable glass lenses 35+ GoPro mounts/accessories; scuba housing compatibility should be confirmed separately

Bluewater take: X5 remains compelling if value matters most. X6 makes more sense when you specifically want 8K50, larger sensors, deeper native waterproofing, built-in storage and the latest Insta360 workflow. MAX2 is appealing for established GoPro users, but its 5 m native depth rating is substantially shallower.

Build the System

Complete Insta360 X6 Underwater Setup

  1. Camera: Insta360 X6 with Xtreme Battery. The Standard Bundle includes the camera, one Xtreme Battery, USB-C cable and protective pouch.
  2. Housing: Add the X6 Invisible Dive Case Pro for scuba dives beyond 20 m and for the dedicated 360 underwater optical configuration.
  3. Mount / Port: For the cleanest 360 third-person look, use an Invisible Selfie Stick or floating grip. For a lighting rig, connect through the 1/4"-20 mount to an appropriate tray or adapter.
  4. Lighting: In shallow clear water, ambient light often produces the cleanest 360 setup. If you add video lights, use wide beams and enough arm length to minimize hotspots and keep the lights themselves from dominating the frame.
  5. Accessories: Add a UHS-I V30-or-faster microSD card, spare battery, fast charger, retention strap and a safe place to protect the two exposed lenses between dives.
Important 360 lighting note: Unlike a normal action camera, the X6 sees almost everything around it. A conventional short-arm dual-light rig may be visible in the final image, so lighting position deserves more planning. Divepro does offer specialised 360 degree lighting which would be a unique addition for this setup.

Why Buy From Bluewater Photo?

A Camera Is Only Useful If the Whole Dive System Works

Insta360 has developed a broad action-camera and 360 ecosystem, and the X6 addresses two practical ownership concerns we hear frequently from divers: accidental lens damage and deeper underwater use. Replaceable lenses, the 20 m native rating and the dedicated 60 m dive-case option all make the platform more practical around real dive operations.

Bluewater Photo can help you go beyond the camera specification sheet and confirm the dive case, mounting method, memory card, battery strategy and lighting configuration that make sense for the way you actually dive.

Content reviewed by Bluewater Photo staff, recognized as the #1 online retailer specializing in underwater photography and scuba diving equipment, with real-world experience supporting, selling, and configuring underwater camera systems.

Insta360 X6 FAQ

Is the Insta360 X6 waterproof without a housing?

Yes. The X6 is rated waterproof to 66 ft / 20 m without a housing. For deeper scuba diving and the dedicated underwater 360 optical setup, use the X6 Invisible Dive Case Pro.

How deep can the Insta360 X6 go with the dive case?

The X6 Invisible Dive Case Pro extends the system to 197 ft / 60 m. That covers the normal recreational scuba range with substantial depth margin.

Does the Insta360 X6 Standard Bundle include a microSD card?

No. The camera has 64GB of built-in storage with approximately 47GB available, but a fast microSD card is recommended for longer 8K recording sessions.

What microSD card should I use with the Insta360 X6?

Use a UHS-I card rated V30 or faster; cards up to 1TB are supported. For dive travel, we prefer multiple reputable cards rather than relying on one card for an entire trip.

Is the Insta360 X6 better than the Insta360 X5 camera?

X6 is the stronger choice if you need 8K50, larger 1/1.1-inch sensors, 120MP stills, 20 m native waterproofing, built-in storage or 10-bit I-Log. X5 remains a good value if 8K30 is enough and purchase price matters more than the newer features.

Can I use underwater video lights with the X6?

Yes, but lighting a 360 camera takes more planning because the camera can see the arms and lights around it. Wide beams, greater light-to-camera distance and careful positioning help minimize visible rigging and uneven hotspots. Divepro offers specialised 360 degree lights for these cameras

Do X5 accessories work with the X6?

Some magnetic mounts are cross-compatible with X5, X4 Air and Ace-series systems, but do not assume housings, batteries or optical accessories are interchangeable. Contact Bluewater Photo if you want us to confirm a specific accessory.

How should I maintain the X6 after saltwater use?

Rinse the camera exterior or dive case thoroughly with fresh water and let it dry before opening battery or USB doors. If you use the dive case, inspect and clean its sealing surfaces and O-ring before the next dive.
