The Nikon D7100 is the long anticipated replacement for the popular Nikon D7000 DSLR camera and our top choice for underwater photography with a cropped sensor camera.

Check out the many great new features of the Nauticam Nikon D7100 housing in our video review.

Nauticam D7100 initial thoughts - Scott

Within minutes of diving underwater with this housing, I was comfortable with all of the controls, easily changing shutter speed, ISO and aperture as needed to try out some wide-angle shots with my Tokina lens. Although visibility was not great, using the small 4-inch port meant that I could get extremely close to the small anemone you see in the photo above. Nauticam made the info button a lever on the right side so I could easily see my settings in the LCD screen anytime that I needed to. One word of caution - be sure to turn off the focus assist light when using a Nikon dSLR or it can slow down the focusing!

I was pleasantly surprised by the sharpness of small Zen port. Granted, I was shooting at smaller f-stops, but that is normal for close-focus wide-angle.

Overall I give this setup a huge thumbs up - the D7100 is my top choice for a cropped sensor underwater dSLR, and you can't go wrong with the Nauticam housing + Zen 4-inch glass port. - Scott

Nauticam D7100 initial thoughts - Shane

The first thing I notice is that I can pretty much control anything I need like the shutter, rear-focus lock, info button, and ISO without moving my hands off the handles. The control dials are very easy to spin, and again I don't have to take my hands off the handles - one is used with my thumb, and one with my middle finger. The playback button is easy to get to with your left thumb for a quick review of your photos. The ability to push the flash and pop it up is quite useful for shooting ambient light. The zoom dial is also easily accessed, being very close to the handle.  I would recommend a first-time user gets familiar with the housing for the first dive, to get used to the position of the controls, since they are in a different place that they are on the camera. The port locking system worked well and was very easy to use.

If you want to move the mode dial, you don't have to push down a second button like you do on the camera, this is a very nice feature that Nauticam clearly put some thought into.

The biggest thing that I came away with after using this housing in the ocean was just the ease of use. The Zen 4-inch port is nice because it is easy to swim with because of its small size. One word of caution - don't leave the port in the sun, and make sure you wipe it down or you could get a water mark on the glass port. - Shane
