I've now done about 200 dives with my EPL2 camera and Olympic housing and it's held up beautifully. Me and "my baby" have dove in warm and cold water and from boat and shore without any problems. The compact size and light weight of the camera and housing is a real advantage when traveling or when trudging across the beach on a shore dive.
The EPL2 and housing also has great functionality. The locking mechanism on the housing is fast, simple and secure. The camera buttons and menus are intuitive and easy to learn. With the touch of one button you can switch from stills to video and back again. You can customize the function button for a one touch manual white balance. Even with my small hands I can reach all the exposure controls without taking my finger away from the shutter release. There's no noticeable shutter lag. Focusing is faster than on my old Canon G11. I can crop off half the photo and still have a nice picture left. My photos are looking much better since I upgraded to this setup.
I have only a few quibbles with this camera/housing combo and the solutions are pretty easy:
1) The camera has trouble with a manual white balance in all but bright light conditions. I have to bump up the ISO to do it.
2) There's no way to pop up the flash once the housing is closed. Check that its up before you go diving.
3) The macro adaptor is great for quickly adding and taking off a wet macro lens but its a little loose on the front of the housing and tends to slip off at odd times. A little duct tape around the edges of the adaptor tightened it up nicely.
4) The front port is hard to twist off. I've resorted to using a strap wrench to get it off. I have the Precision dome port too and that's an even tighter fit!
Bottom line: I've had a ton of fun diving with this setup and I've learned a lot. I was hesitant at first to make the investment in better camera gear but now I'm so glad I did.
This housing is great - allowing full and easy access to camera functions, large display and fairly idiot proof locking system so that flooding is very, very unlikely!
I recently upgraded form a top of the line point and shot camera. Scott, said "there will be no comparison" and he was right! This camera and housing is awesome, the photos totally exceeded my expectations. Actually, during my recent visit to Grand Cayman, I took the only underwater photos that I have been totally happy with. The video also worked great. The only problem is my wife loves using this camera and takes it from me half way through our dives... The camera also works well on dry land. Scott and the crew at BlueWater know what they are talking about and provide excellent customer service. I could not be more happy with my purchase and I would love to take a class from BlueWater in the near future. Scott has a loyal customer......
First of all, let me say Scott Gietler and the crew at Blue Water Photo are the best. They know and use the equipment they sell. I could call and ask dumb, I am sure, eye rolling questions and they always helped me. I just got back from Cozumel with my new Olympus E-PL2 camera housing and everything went EXCELLENT!!! Easy to use, secure, and foolproof. Cleaning the O ring is a snap. The buttons are easy to use underwater. The TTL on the fiber optic plug worked great and was secure. I also liked the DSLR style shutter lever and that the housing is not positively bouyant. I also dive primarily in the Pacific Northwest and I have taken the new set up along in some very challenging ocean conditions at times and I can attest that the housing can take being tossed around in surge. I wear 5 mm gloves and I can do what I need to do with the buttons. Most importantly, it takes GREAT pictures!
BlueWaterPhoto's Jason and Scott saved my dive trip. I had ordered this same housing from another company. That company completely messed up my shipping address and did not notify me until 2 days before I was set to leave. I called BlueWaterPhoto in a panic. These guys called me down and determined that they could ship my camera housing to me in time for my trip. They did. Not only that, they spent an hour with me on the phone confining the part numbers I needed for the zoom ring to allow the housing to have full zoom capability under water. They didn't have the ring but because of their research I was able to pick it up locally. These guys are the best at what they do. They didn't just take my money. They wanted me to be fully informed as well as have all the proper equipment. They spent the time to take care of me as their customer. I will always recommend that type of service.
Thanks you guys. It meant the world to me. You saved my trip.
This was this product easy to use and helped me to take some of the most spectacular underwater video and photos of my life. The case has easy operation, clear directions and Olympus's tech support phone lines are amazingly helpful even late into the evening. (Like the night before my trip)
I recently purchased from Blue Water Photo the Olympus PT-EP03 Underwater Housing for E-PL2 PEN. Additionally I purchased the Ultralight AC-CSF New Style Clamp, handles and brackets. Mark, one of the employees, was very helpful with the selection and offered many suggestions. Additionally I bought the macro lens and the external adapter for it. I tested these products (above water) and found them easy to use. I wont be able to get in the water with them until my trip this April. I don’t expect any problems. The macro system is especially cool because you can remove it underwater if a larger subject becomes interesting. The time I spent searching on the Internet, I found that Blue Water Photo prices are very reasonable. Products when purchased over the phone arrived promptly within one to two business days.
I picked up my full rig from Scott a few days ago and tested everything out yesterday. The housing is easy to use, light weight and pretty compact. The buttons are straight forward and not complicated. The great thing about the housing is it's versatility. Dome ports can be added if needed and a wet lens system works perfectly with it.
