Suunto Ocean Review:
A powerful smartwatch and dive computer combo
The Suunto Ocean is a 2-in-1 dive computer and smartwatch that performs both underwater and on land. The Ocean is particularly suited to recreational divers who live an active lifestyle and want high quality perfomance underwater, but it might not be an ideal choice for technical divers. Our team at Bluewater Photo and Scuba tested it out for themselves, watch the video below to hear our full review:

What we loved and what to consider:
Through our experience with the Suunto Ocean, there were many amazing features that stood out to us when diving, but also a few that you may want to consider before purchasing one for yourself:
Pros:
- The screen is extremely bright and easy to read, even in poor conditions.
- Easy user-interface and lockable buttons.
- Very good battery life for a dive computer
- When we used it, the air integration was seemless with the Suunto tank pod
- 3D dive logging with easy-to-read maps with accurate GPS coordinates
Cons:
- Not created for technical divers, with no trimix or rebreather options, but it does have multigas options.
- Slightly bulky as a smartwatch, especially for small wrists (but it is still relatively slim for a dive computer)
- Charger only comes in USB A options, not USB C.

Full review breakdown:
Let's take a closer look at how each function of the Suunto Ocean performs, from the design and materials, to the computer's display, dive functionality and out-of water abilities. If you are considering transitioning to wireless air integration, we will also touch on the Suunto tank Pod and how this can upgrade your diving...
Design and Materials:
The Suunto Ocean is designed with a tough corrosion-resistant case and a crystal sapphire screen, enabling it to withstand any knocks and scratches. It's sleek design sets it apart from conventional dive computers, allowing it to slip under wetsuit sleeves and remain comfortable during long dives. The addition of lockable buttons help prevent accidental setting changes when being in contact with a wetsuit.
Additional features include:
- 100 m water resistance
- Replaceable straps for wetsuit or daily wear
- Temperature and pressure-tested construction
Display and Usability:
Alerts vibrate and are clearly audible, without being too intrusive, and the three-button design allows divers to use this computer comfortably- even with thick gloves on! Unlike dive computers such as Garmin and Shearwater, you are unfortunately unable to change the dive display to your preference. In our opinion, this is not too much of a disadvantage as the display is good enough how it is.

Diving modes:
The Suunto Ocean offers a range of modes suited to recreational diving, such as Air, Nitrox, Guage and Freediving. The oxygen percentage can be adjusted up to 100%, and the Ocean can support up to 5 gas mixtures which can be changed mid-dive.
It does not offer CCR or trimix features, making it less suited to serious technical divers, but it is perfect for beginner divers to the more advanced recreational divers. Even for those aspiring mermaids- with the Ocean having mermaid mode!
Air integration:
The connection and data transfer between the dive computer and the Suunto Tank Pod transmitter is seemless, and the remaining air data is simple and clear to read.
What is especially great is that you can connect with up to 5 Suunto Tank Pods with one Suunto Ocean, allowing you to monitor your buddy's or the rest of your dive group's air consumption.
Sports modes and daily life use:
When you are out of the water, the Suunto Ocean still delivers! With over 95 sports modes- users can track multiple activities from yoga, mountain climbing, skiing, the list goes on. You are able to access many free offline maps for your adventures, too.
With this being said, we still find the sports features of the Garmin Descent Mk3i to be stronger, but for the price difference, the Suunto Ocean is still a great competitor!
The Suunto Ocean also offers health monitoring, such as steps, calories, heart rate monitors and sleep quality analysis. Being able to control your music and set smart alarms is a plus!

In summary: We would absolutely recommend the Suunto Ocean to recreational divers looking for a high performing dive computer and smartwatch combination with a wide variety on features above and below the water, on a budget.
