Ikelite DS165 Underwater Strobe Review
Posted by Nirupam Nigam on October 5th, 2025
In an exciting move this summer, Ikelite has updated the Ikelite DS160 II to the new Ikelite DS 165 underwater strobe. This strobe represents the mid-range prosumer model in Ikelite's line-up. Though, in reality, its performance and $995 price is a bit closer to a high-end pro strobe. The DS165 features 160 Ws of output, ultra-fast recycle times, and an updated beam adopted from the ever-popular DS230s. Our staff at Bluewater Photo were lucky enough to be some of the first to dive with this incredible strobe during our Bluewater Travel Sea of Cortez underwater photoworkshop. Equipped with the new Nikon Z5 II, we photographed sea lions, whale sharks, and a wide range of critters including skeleton shrimp. This amalgamation of subjects was perfect for testing the strobes TTL capability with the Nikon Ikelite TTL converter as well as the true limits of recycle times.

Key Underwater Strobe Features
Build Quality and Handling
As with other Ikelite strobes, the DS165 is build like a brick. It's made from a hard polycarbonate material and in my years of using Ikelite strobes, I've bumped them, dropped them, and swam through strong surf and sand. I've only ever produced minor scratches.
The strobe has two simple dials for control - a mode dial and a power dial. Both dials have been updated in the last couple of years to be easier to turn - especially with gloves on. I certainly found that to be the case in my dives in the Sea of Cortez.
The back battery pack attaches to the strobe via an easy-to-use latch and a compression o-ring. At Bluewater we often tell our customers that this is the safest design of any underwater strobes on the market with a lower failure rate than we've seen from other strobes.

Beam Quality
The beam has been largely improved from the DS160 IIs with the DS165s. The beam angle is much wider at 120 degrees. You no longer need diffusers on the DS1650s and the coverage over the reef is beautiful! Just take a look at how nice, even, and natural the lighting is on this photo of a scorpionfish.

Moreover, the color temperature is now a bit cooler than previous models at 5000K. This will be welcomed by coldwater divers especially, but the beam is also still warm enough to produce beautiful blues after some correction in post.
Recycle Time and Underwater Performance
As with other pro Ikelite strobes, the DS165s have lightning quick recycle times. One second at 160 Ws and all the way down to nothing at lower powers! I found in my dives that the output was more consistent from flash to flash than previous models of strobe - much like the newer DS230s. More consistent shooting means you can plan out your shots a bit more and you now what to expect during a burst shooting series. Lightning quick recycle times were perfect for capturing photos of quick subjects like the sea lion below - especially with TTL. Not having to worry about the power dial made it easy.
Fiber Optic vs Sync Cord Version
There are currently two versions of the Ikelite 165 strobes. The Ikelite RC165 strobes have a fiber optic bulkhead that allow you to attach fiber optic cables to the strobe directly - without the need for a converter. The Ikelite DS165 strobe is no different than previous models of high-end Ikelite strobes. It has an Ikelite sync cord bulkhead. You can still attach external fiber optic adapters to this strobe if you wish.
Ikelite DS165 Pros and Cons
Pros
- Strong, Even Light Output: The DS165 delivers bright, consistent coverage with a smooth 120° beam, perfect for both macro and wide-angle photography.
- Fast Recycle Time: Virtually no lag between shots — recycle speeds from 0.1 to 1 second keep up with fast action.
- Accurate Color Temperature: Neutral 5000K daylight balance produces natural tones and easy color correction.
- Excellent TTL Performance: Seamlessly supports TTL with Ikelite housings and compatible systems for Nikon, Canon, and Sony.
- Built-in Aiming Light: A 205-lumen LED helps pre-visualize lighting and improves focusing in low-light conditions.

- Reliable Battery System: Quick-swappable, airline-safe NiMH battery pack delivers strong endurance and recharges fast between dives.
- Proven Ikelite Durability: Long-standing reputation for reliability, serviceability, and full compatibility with legacy accessories.

Cons
- Larger and Heavier Than Compact Strobes: Adds some bulk to a travel kit, though underwater balance is excellent.
- Higher Price Point: Professional performance comes at a cost, though it’s justified by longevity and power.
- Limited Accessory Ecosystem: Fewer third-party diffusers or modifiers compared to brands like Marelux or Inon.
Final Verdict
The Ikelite DS165 remains one of the most powerful, dependable, and professional-grade underwater strobes available today. With its fast recycle times, wide beam coverage, and proven TTL reliability, it’s a top choice for serious underwater photographers who demand consistent lighting and bulletproof performance on every dive.
