Marelux Soft Dock for Backscatter Atom flash
The Marelux Smart Optical Flash Tube Strobe Mount allows you to mount the Marelux SOFT to your Backscatter Atom Flash Underwater Strobe.
The Marelux Soft Dock is a professional-grade essential designed to give underwater photographers total control over their lighting. While originally engineered as a mounting interface for snoots, many professional users have discovered that these docks are powerful standalone tools for light shaping. They are particularly effective for macro and blackwater photography, where managing contrast and eliminating backscatter is critical.
Advanced Light Control and Backscatter Reduction
Standard underwater strobes typically have wide beam angles ranging from 90 to 140 degrees. In environments with high particulate matter, these wide beams illuminate the water between the lens and the subject, resulting in distracting backscatter. While snoots offer a very tight spotlight, they are often too narrow for anything beyond extreme macro.
The Marelux Soft Dock provides a perfect middle ground. By narrowing the strobe's native beam, it allows you to cross your light beams precisely at the subject without lighting the surrounding water. This technique creates stereoscopic depth and ensures the subject "pops" against a clean, dark background.
Four Versatile Utility Modes
Marelux offers a range of docks compatible with strobes from most major manufacturers, providing four distinct lighting configurations:
- Beam Narrowing: Simply mounting the dock to your strobe focuses the light beam, typically narrowing it to approximately 60 degrees for cleaner, more directed illumination.
- Precision Diffuser Slot: Adding a slot for flat diffusers can further narrow the beam to 50 degrees. This creates an exceptionally smooth, even light field while maintaining high contrast between the subject and background.
- Creative Color Filters: The integrated slot supports Marelux's system of five different color filters. This allows photographers to experiment with creative backlighting or vibrant artistic effects in-camera.
- Modified Dome Diffusion: For a slightly softer feel, you can mount a dome diffuser on the dock. This provides an intermediate beam angle—wider than 60 degrees but significantly tighter than the strobe's original 110-160 degree spread—offering soft light with minimal flare.
