We really like the Nauticam NA-NEX5N Housing for Sony NEX-5N. This housing brings the image quality of an advanced DSLR size sensor into the underwater world - in a system so compact that it easily fits into a daypack. The camera is outstanding, and the housing is very small.
Also consider the Nauticam Sony NEX-7 housing, the NEX-7 is the best mirrorless camera on the market.
The Sony NEX-5N is the Sony’s latest entrant in its APS-C series of mirror-less interchangeable lens cameras and presents itself as a formidable upgrade from the NEX-5 that it replaces.
NEX-5N sports a new 16-megapixel CMOS sensor along with several upgrades over the NEX-5. It features a first curtain electronic shutter designed to substantially reduce shutter lag which also helps to raise the still shooting rate to 10 frames per second in speed-priority-continuous mode. For video shooters, the NEX-5N shoots 1080p at 60fps. Additional new features include expanded ISO range, in camera lens correction, and touch screen menus and camera control.
Underwater photographers have long had to choose between the excellent image quality of a DSLR versus the compact size of point and shoot cameras. With the NA-NEX5N housing from Nauticam, that paradigm has now changed. The 16-megapixel APS-C sized sensor in NEX-5N means no image quality compromise, and this housing is incredibly small and light.
NA-NEX5N delivers the advanced functionality of the NEX-5N in style and with the ergonomics that people have come to expect from Nauticam. Based on the highly successful NA-NEX5 housing, the new housing accommodates the changes in camera body and control positions for the NEX-5N. All of the NEX-5N camera controls available from the ergonomic grip sculpted into the side of the housing. A choice of hand strap and left/right handle means the shooter can customize the housing to meet their specific needs.
The same Nauticam patented locking port release system used in the NEX-5 housings has been incorporated, allowing easy and secure port changes. Ports are available for the major lenses that are useful underwater, including the Sony 18-55mm, 16m pancake, 16mm pancake + FE adapter, and the 16mm pancake + WA adapter. Nauticam will also immediately support the new Sony 30mm macro lens when it becomes available.
The camera is quickly mounted in the housing via a snap in camera tray, and the housing is securely closed with a locking rotary latch. The compact form factor and outstanding low light performance make this a perfect system for technical divers exploring extended range environments. The housing is securely closed with a locking rotary latch.
Ergonomics is one of the areas that all Nauticam housings excel and the Nauticam NA-NEX5N housing is no exception. This housing puts all of the important controls on the camera within easy reach. Shutter Release, Zoom, Movie Record, Playback, 4-way buttons, Function C and Menu and the Control Dial are all placed for easy access. A flash control lever makes it easy to close the flash so silhouette shots are a breeze.
Existing NA-NEX5N customers wanting to upgrade will not lose their investment. Ports and other accessories from NA-NEX5 can be used with no modification. Nauticam is producing an upgrade kit that will allow an existing NA-NEX5 housing to be retrofitted to work with the NEX-5N camera.
The housing back is sealed with an easy to operate safety clasp. A safety release button must be pressed in order to begin rotating the clasp, eliminating the chance of accidental opening.
Only the finest materials and cutting edge manufacturing processes are used to make Nauticam housings. The housing body is machined from solid aircraft grade aluminum, then hard anodized making it impervious to salt water. The large acrylic LCD window is treated with an anti-reflective, scratch resistant coating.
Nauticam uses a sophisticated over-mold process to produce extremely comfortable rubberized ergonomic handgrips. The soft feel and ergonomic design make the housing easy to grip and minimize hand fatigue on long dives. Both single and double handle configurations are available for complete customization, and each handle can be adjusted laterally allowing the user to dial in perfect fit. A hand strap is also available for those wishing an even smaller profile.
Reliable automatic flash exposure is available with Nauticam housings and a variety of optically fired flashes. Inon Z-240, D-2000, S-2000, Sea & Sea YS-D1, and YS-01 strobes provide automated lighting, precisely reproducing the camera’s onboard flash at a proportionally greater intensity. This system yields accurate TTL flash performance with no electrical sync cables to flood! With NEX-5N, optical TTL is enhanced even more since NEX-5N can perform TTL in manual exposure mode.
Strobes can be attached to the housing via optional strobe mounting balls on the handles or a single strobe mounting ball point on the housing. The housing also features a cold-shoe mount for even more mounting options.
Nauticam Housings are machined from a solid block of seawater resistant aluminum alloy, then hard anodized making them impervious to corrosion. All hardware is marine grade stainless steel. Acrylic windows protected with a scratch resistant material.
The housing ergonomics are great - much better than my previous rig, which was an Ikelite + Canon G12. I can easily hold it in one hand. The shutter uses a large button with an indentation that makes my dry-gloved finger able to feel the right place as well as the feedback from the camera to tell I've locked focus.
With the optional tray & strobe attachments, plus floats (it's smaller than an acrylic housing, so it doesn't float as well) it is nice and manageable.
I especially like the optical strobe system - so much more reliable than an electric connection. Plus, if you damage one of the cords like I did, you can actually repair it with tools you'd find in a dive shop. Bonus!
I'm finding I don't need my diopter yet for macro, as zooming in keeping a low F stop does fine for me. Definitely not the same world as a point & click, but not the pain and expense of a DSLR. I'm happy with it.
I wanted an easy-to-use, reliable housing for my new Sony NEX-5N, and the Nauticam housing delivered.
You first attach a small mounting tray to the bottom of the camera via the tripod connector, and then you easily snap the camera/tray combination into place inside the housing. The housing locks simply and securely with a rotary latch. With the camera installed, it was easy to turn the camera on/off and comfortably operate all the controls to adjust settings both above and under the water. As a default, the camera installs with the review screen at a slight angle, which I don’t normally use above ground, but I found it helpful for reviewing photos underwater.
Along with the housing, I bought two ports – the one that fits the Sony 18-55mm lens and the one for the 16mm pancake lens with fisheye adapter. The ports were easy to remove and install. Typical o-ring maintenance on the ports and the housing was a breeze.
The bottom line with this housing, and my whole rig for that matter, was that it was so simple to operate and so reliable against leaks that I could concentrate on my diving safety and my photography, which was the whole goal.
Finally, I have to give a shout-out to Scott and his crew for helping me assemble my new rig. They listened to my goals as a photographer, steered me in some good directions, and answered all my questions as I did more research and narrowed my choices. After I received the new gear, they continued to be very helpful when I had questions about the rig or even just photography in general. I’m very pleased with the whole experience – thanks!
Before I start with the review it's worth noting that I had only just passed my Padi Open Water course and the first chance to use the set up would be my first proper dive. Needless to say the excitement of diving for the first time at depth and using a camera set up was a little daunting.
After much consideration and expert guidance from Scott I decided to purchase this product along with a sea & sea YS-D1 strobe with the relevant fibre optic cable, tray and handle for a complete set up. Within an hour I had the set up complete which was straight forward and no manual was needed, please also note I was at work :-)
The housing is so straight forward to use and the ergonomics are well thought out. The fact that all the locking mechanisms click into place is good for reassurance. I purchased the additional zoom gear and highly recommend that you spend the extra to give you the added range, as you know fish etc don't really hang about for you to get a close up. The many buttons are very simple to use with and without gloves and offer you full use of your camera.
The fact I got so many great images with my first use means I would highly recommend this housing to anyone thinking of buying.
First Impressions Of Sony Nex-5n Camera(upgraded from digi compact):
Camera: After years of loyalty to another brand I was a bit concerned about learning the controls and menu functions of a new camera. I was suprised to find that within an hour of meeting my new friend Nex5n, i was in-tune with its inteface and impressed with its ease of use.
After using a compact for the last year, let me tell you what i think the most noticeable differences are. The focus speed of the Nex5n reminds me of the story of the tortoise and the hare as it left my digital compact in the dust. Next would be the superior image quality. With its dslr sized sensor there is a noticeable difference in image quality especially when cropping images. I also found it to be easier to blur the backround with an open apperature to that of my compact. I want to leave you with at least one downside that i found and that is the fact that it only syncs to 1/160th with the strobe making it a little harder to get those black backrounds.
Nauticam Nex5n Housing: Ergonomics are brilliant! I especially like the fact i can adjust the zoom knob with my left index finger without taking my hand from the handle. Buttoms are easy to operate with/without gloves. I didnt have any mishaps with the buttons that i have experienced with other housings. The port locking system is nice as well, it will not lock unless the port is inserted correctly giving some peace of mind. I wish the ports were a little more resistant to scratches considering the price so just be very careful when cleaning.
I would recommend this housing/camera setup to others.
