Sea & Sea YS-D12S CUBee compact underwater strobe

Sea & Sea YS-D12S CUBee Underwater Strobe

A remarkably small, travel-friendly Sea & Sea strobe built around simple OM SYSTEM RC flash control, a TG-series battery, and enough beam coverage for compact-camera macro, fish portraits, and close-range reef photography.

The Sea & Sea YS-D12S CUBee is a compact 12Ws underwater strobe designed especially around the OM SYSTEM Tough TG workflow. Connect it with a fiber-optic cable, use OM SYSTEM RC flash control on a compatible TG-series setup, and you get a much cleaner route into external underwater lighting than building a large, high-output strobe rig.

In the water, its biggest advantages are size and simplicity. We see it making the most sense for traveling TG shooters, macro photographers, close fish portraits, and divers who want their first external flash without turning a compact housing into a bulky camera system.

  • Best for: OM SYSTEM TG-series shooters, travel diving, macro, close-focus subjects, and compact single-strobe rigs.
  • Main advantage: Tiny body, essentially neutral underwater weighting, and straightforward OM SYSTEM RC integration.
  • Compatibility: OM SYSTEM RC operation requires a fiber-optic connection; SEA&SEA shows the PT-059 housing as an example system.
  • Major differentiator: It uses the OM SYSTEM LI-92B lithium-ion battery—the same battery family used by compatible TG cameras—so a traveling TG shooter can simplify spare-battery management.
  • Compared with larger strobes: The CUBee prioritizes compactness over brute-force output. Higher-output strobes remain better for large domes, distant wide-angle subjects, and heavy ambient-light balancing.
  • Bluewater advantage: We can confirm the housing, fiber-optic cable, mounting hardware, battery, charger, and strobe configuration before you commit to the system.

What makes the Sea & Sea YS-D12S CUBee different?

Most underwater strobes are designed first around maximum output and only second around how much hardware they add to your rig. The CUBee goes in the opposite direction. Its 65 × 60 × 77mm body is genuinely compact, and its published underwater weight is essentially neutral, so it preserves the handling that makes a TG-series system enjoyable in the first place.

For an OM SYSTEM shooter, the battery decision is also unusually practical. The CUBee uses an LI-92B lithium-ion battery, allowing compatible TG users to standardize around the same battery type rather than carrying a separate set of AA cells or another proprietary strobe pack.

The tradeoff is output. At 12Ws and a 3-second full recycle time, this is not the strobe we would choose to overpower tropical sun behind a large dome or light a distant wreck scene. It makes much more sense when the subject is close—which is exactly how successful compact-camera macro, fish portrait, and close-focus underwater photography is normally shot.

Features that matter once you're underwater

Sea & Sea YS-D12S CUBee mounted on a compact underwater camera rig with fiber optic cable

A strobe that doesn't overwhelm a compact rig

One of the easiest ways to ruin the appeal of a TG-series camera is to bolt on a lighting system that weighs more than the housing. The CUBee is different: the body measures only 65 × 60 × 77mm and SEA&SEA lists its underwater weight at -7g with the battery installed.

  • Easier to travel with than a conventional full-size strobe
  • Keeps a one-handed or small-tray system more manageable
  • Less mass hanging off the end of an arm
  • Good match for compact macro and fish-portrait workflows

OM SYSTEM RC control removes unnecessary setup friction

A first strobe is only useful if the diver can get it firing consistently. With a compatible TG setup, the workflow is straightforward: connect the strobe with fiber optic, select RC on the camera, and select RC mode on the CUBee. That is much easier to explain on a dive boat than a complicated converter-and-trigger chain.

  • Digital optical flash control from compatible OM SYSTEM cameras
  • No electrical sync cord required for the documented TG workflow
  • Well suited to photographers learning external flash
  • Fiber-optic connection keeps the triggering system mechanically simple

The included diffuser makes the light more useful for real subjects

Without the diffuser, the published beam is 50° × 105°. With the broader coverage available from the supplied Diffuser S, the CUBee becomes much easier to aim at fish, small reef scenes, and close-focus compositions where missing one edge of the frame is a common beginner mistake.

  • Up to 100° × 110° published beam coverage
  • Included diffuser—no separate diffuser purchase required
  • Useful 5500K color temperature for natural-looking flash illumination
  • Snoot S compatibility adds a path into creative macro lighting

Sea & Sea YS-D12S CUBee vs other compact underwater strobes

Output specifications are not always directly comparable because some manufacturers publish watt-seconds while others publish guide number. Use this table to compare the intended application and system workflow—not just one headline number.

Product Power / Output Beam Recycle Best Use System Compatibility
Sea & Sea YS-D12S CUBee 12Ws Up to 100° × 110° 3 sec. TG travel rigs, macro, close subjects Fiber optic; strongest documented fit is OM SYSTEM RC / TG series
Sea & Sea YS-01 SOLIS 49Ws / GN20 100° × 100°; 110° × 110° with diffuser 1.9 sec. Ni-MH More output, broader general-purpose use Fiber optic; DS-TTL II and manual control
INON S-220 GN22 140° × 100°; up to 150° × 110° with soft filter Approx. 2.0–2.1 sec. with recommended Ni-MH Compact general-purpose strobe with very wide coverage Optical; S-TTL Auto / manual, depending on camera system
Backscatter Mini Flash 3 GN ƒ18 Macro-focused beam; diffuser / snoot ecosystem 1.0 sec. Macro, snooting, remote lighting Fiber optic; manual plus OM SYSTEM/Olympus and Sony TTL workflows with appropriate setup

Our take: choose the CUBee when minimizing size and simplifying a TG-series RC system are more important than maximum flash output. Choose a YS-01 SOLIS or S-220 when you need more general-purpose lighting power and coverage, or a Mini Flash 3 when macro, snooting, fast recycling, and remote-lighting functions are the priority.

Underwater photography support does not end at checkout

Sea & Sea is a long-established underwater imaging manufacturer, and the CUBee is backed by a product ecosystem that includes dedicated mounting bases, optical cables, a diffuser, snoot, and service parts. More importantly, a strobe purchase only works when every piece around it is compatible.

Bluewater Photo specializes in complete underwater systems. Our staff can help confirm the camera, housing, trigger method, cable, arm hardware and power accessories so you do not discover a missing adapter while assembling your camera the night before a dive trip.

Bluewater also provides ongoing setup support, and most in-stock orders are typically shipped within one business day according to our current shipping policy.

Sea & Sea YS-D12S CUBee FAQ

Will the CUBee work with my OM SYSTEM TG-7?

Yes, the CUBee is specifically designed around OM SYSTEM RC-compatible flash operation, and SEA&SEA shows the PT-059 housing as an example system. A fiber-optic cable is required between the housing and strobe.

Can I use the CUBee with an Olympus TG-6?

The PT-059 housing is officially compatible with both the TG-6 and TG-7, and SEA&SEA positions the CUBee for the TG series. Contact Bluewater Photo if you want us to confirm your exact camera, housing and RC setup before ordering.

Does the Sea & Sea YS-D12S CUBee support TTL?

It supports OM SYSTEM Wireless RC flash control for compatible OM SYSTEM camera setups. SEA&SEA has not clearly published DS-TTL or DS-TTL II compatibility for this model, so non-OM SYSTEM TTL applications should be confirmed before purchase.

Do I need a fiber-optic cable?

Yes for the documented OM SYSTEM RC setup. The fiber-optic cable carries the camera's optical flash signal from the housing to the CUBee.

Is the battery included with the CUBee?

That depends on the specific package selected; SEA&SEA offers a main-unit configuration as well as battery-and-charger configurations. Check the Bluewater product option before checkout if you need an LI-92B battery and UC-92 charger.

Can I charge the LI-92B battery inside the strobe?

No. SEA&SEA specifies that the battery must be removed and charged with the genuine OM SYSTEM UC-92 charger.

Is 12Ws enough for wide-angle underwater photography?

It can work for close-focus reef scenes where the foreground is near the strobe, especially with the diffuser. For large domes, bright sun, distant subjects or demanding blue-water wide angle, we would normally recommend a higher-output strobe.

How should I maintain the CUBee after diving?

Rinse the assembled strobe thoroughly in fresh water after saltwater use, inspect and maintain the sealing O-ring according to the manufacturer's instructions, and keep the battery contacts and sealing surfaces clean. Carrying a spare YS-D12S O-ring is a sensible travel precaution.
