This is our favorite strobe for the compact camera user, or beginner dSLR shooter. It's small, powerful, and has excellent TTL capability.
Almost everyone who buys a strobe has trouble learning how to use it properly. The Bluewater photo team won't let that happen to you - we know this strobe inside and out, and have tested it with dozens of various cameras. Call us at 310-633-5052 with any questions!
* This strobe does NOT include a ball mount, if you want a ball mount you'll need the Ultralight AD-SS
Don't forget to buy a spare tube of Sea & Sea's silicone grease.
We dive with our products all the time. Please call the Bluewater Photo team at 310-633-5052 with any questions, or email us at firstname.lastname@example.org
I absolutely love this little flash! Lots of power and shows the color of marine life. I use this in combo with the RecSea housing and the canon S95. The combination of all three units is tough to beat.
Most of my U/W photography is in the 3 ft and less, distance range. Very good shots! Battery useage is about 2-3 dives for me, about 50 shots or so. Am using the Sanyo rechargeable batteries.
The whole combination is highly recommended. No issues, just great success.
I ordered my first light a year ago before going to Belize and was Abe to take some beautiful photos with my Sony rx100. Now, I just received my second light to give me more options. Scottand the crew do a great job helping. I will come here for all of my photo needs.
This strobe is nothing like the old strobes (bigger & heavier) I was used to and what better place to have bought it at then Bluewater Photo. I really like the small size for traveling, its built rugged, has lots of options for controlling the flash and great recycle time. It works great with my Olympus 6020 and PT-048 housing and I know when I move up to another camera and housing that it will still do as excellent job as it does now!
The other good thing is that the guys & girls at Bluewater Photo are passionate about what they do and I know anytime I need help with something or suggestions they are there to help. How much better can it get!
This is an excellent compact stobe. I think it's actually more powerfull than the Sea & Sea YS 90DX that I used presviously. The best feature is the compact size and weight which is really important in this age of checked baggage restrictions. I also have a YS-02 which is basically the same strobe but without the model light. The model light in the YS-01 is not strong enough to be a primary light on a night dive, so I attach a larger night light to my housing and don't bother with using the YS-01 model light. This way I keep the YS-01 model light as my back-up light.
I bought the YS-01 along with a Nauticam housing for my Sony RX100 and an Ultralight Tray.
Though having a previous, modest underwater shooting experience, it was the first time I used a strobe, and I used it during one week of dives in Mexico.
As I found the housing amazing, the strobe didn't leave me as enthusiastic about it, though it did work well overall: it allowed me to take good pictures, and even some I'm proud of! :o)
It also converted me to using a strobe. The colors were so amazingly better, even in clear and shallow waters, and in full daylight that I couldn't now imagine taking underwater pictures without one (and maybe two).
So, I can say the strobe did the job for an initiation. Actually, it's even a good product for the price. Its compact size, and ease of operation are on the plus side. The optical connection to the Nauticam housing worked very well and it fired every time reliably.
Now, on the down side, I found the target light almost useless when shooting in daylight, because it's barely visible, except for very close macro. A pointer-style laser would be far better to help aim the strobe correctly! Second, I found it a bit underpowered and narrow focused: the center of the picture was all right for very close range, but the luminosity dropped off quickly outside the center, even when taking into account only the advertised 100° angle.
After this first experience, I'll surely look for something more powerful for my next dive trip. Maybe a YS-250, plus my YS-01 as a second strobe, if this does make sense (I wanted to start with only one strobe to get used to it: the shadows generated by a unique strobe are actually a bit annoying, especially for macro, and maybe would it make sense to fill them in a bit, instead of suppressing them completely?).

I am a 1 year experienced diver and when I started wanting to share what I was seeing I bought a disposable camera. Wow these pictures are so dark.
Strobe is amazingly easy to operate and does an incredible job. The only thing that could make it better is another one.
My husband and I went to Palau in March of this year, and I knew I needed to upgrade my underwater camera equipment. I have a Canon G11, and was previously shooting with the camera flash only. WHAT A DIFFERENCE THESE STROBES CAN MAKE!! I finally got the vibrant, beautiful colors I see in professional underwater photos. There is definitely a learning curve with positioning the lights correctly, and it takes some practice, but I had much fun doing so. These strobes are very easy to use and maintain - they held up well to seven days of continuous diving. And they are incredibly lightweight, which made them great for travel and packing. I love it when a product is everything you hope it will be, and these strobes are. Can't wait to use them again!
I ordered the dual strobe setup and have been thoroughly impressed. Lots of power even in such a small package.
