This is our favorite strobe for the compact camera user, or beginner dSLR shooter. It's small, powerful, and has excellent TTL capability.
Almost everyone who buys a strobe has trouble learning how to use it properly. The Bluewater photo team won't let that happen to you - we know this strobe inside and out, and have tested it with dozens of various cameras. Call us at 310-633-5052 with any questions!
* This strobe does NOT include a ball mount, if you want a ball mount you'll need the Ultralight AD-SS
Don't forget to buy a spare tube of Sea & Sea's silicone grease.
We dive with our products all the time. Please call the Bluewater Photo team at 310-633-5052 with any questions, or email us at firstname.lastname@example.org
My husband and I went to Palau in March of this year, and I knew I needed to upgrade my underwater camera equipment. I have a Canon G11, and was previously shooting with the camera flash only. WHAT A DIFFERENCE THESE STROBES CAN MAKE!! I finally got the vibrant, beautiful colors I see in professional underwater photos. There is definitely a learning curve with positioning the lights correctly, and it takes some practice, but I had much fun doing so. These strobes are very easy to use and maintain - they held up well to seven days of continuous diving. And they are incredibly lightweight, which made them great for travel and packing. I love it when a product is everything you hope it will be, and these strobes are. Can't wait to use them again!
I ordered the dual strobe setup and have been thoroughly impressed. Lots of power even in such a small package.
I have little to no idea what I am doing with underwater photography, but the strobe along with my S100 have already taken better pictures than I ever thought I would be able to. So far the only hiccup I have had is that on one dive the strobe would not turn on at all; no guide light, no firing. Still have no idea why. I checked the batteries were in the correct orientation, closed it back up and it worked the next dive. I assume it was an id10t user error. I would definitely recommend this strobe, especially if you don't have a dedicated focus light.
I decided to get a strobe for my canon G12 and there was lots of choices sure all are from great companies but i was looking for a kind of strobe to be small in size and powerful in the performance , I got one strobe of S&S ys-01 and it was a size of my hand and lite after testing that product underwater the storbe was really powerful even sometimes i needed to put the EXP control dial at min. and still getting strong light ... after 3 weeks of using that single strobe I was not able to resist myself not to get another one to have dual strobe set for canon G12
totally i recommend this product sea and sea YS-01
This flash is pretty good for close-up photos. It doesn't seem to have a long or wide range, so it's not ideal for things further away than 6'.
It's OK for video, but you have to "hold it" in the "on" position; it does not automatically come on and stay on for video. This is not great because it ties up both hands. It does result in good video, again, at less than 6' away.
It's a little convoluted to mount and you have to make sure it's on REALLY tight, but once you've got it hooked on, it works well.
I did a whole series of dives on Phuket, Thailand, in low-visibility areas and ended up with some good pictures using this flash so I'm happy with it.

This is my first strobe, purchased along w/a Canon S95 and Recsea housing. The unit was compact, easy to use the controls, and easy to maintain and change the batteries. The sync worked flawlessly and I could get two 1 hour dives out of a set of rechargeable batteries. I don't have much to compare it to, but I have no complaints and I took some awesome pictures with this set up (For a rookie!).
Scott and the staff @ Bluewater were excellent at listening to what we wanted, educating us about underwater photography and our options, and then setting us up with the perfect system for our needs. I can't say enough about the service we received.
I couldn't be happier with this strobe on my s95. This is my first underwater camera rig and the YS-01 has done everything I've wanted it to. The focus light is great for night dives. The only negative is that the power knob is a bit tricky to turn with 3mm gloves on when shooting in manual, but it's not enough of an issue to affect my recommendation for the strobe.
